YDAN is hosting an event, sponsored by the WA Department of Communities and supported by the office of Senator Jordon Steele-John, for the WA community to celebrate the International Day of People with Disability.
Join us for a screening of the groundbreaking documentary “Defiant Lives”, which introduces the world to the most impressive activists you’ve never heard of and tells the story of the rise and fight of the disability rights movement in the United States, Britain and Australia.
This film features exclusive interviews with elders (some now deceased) who’ve led the movement over the past five decades, the film weaves together never-before-seen archival footage with the often-confronting personal stories of disabled men and women as they moved from being warehoused in institutions to fighting for independence and control over their lives.
Defiant Lives is a triumphant film full of extraordinary characters who put their lives on the line to create a better and very different world where everyone regardless of impairment is valued and can participate.
This will be followed by a panel discussion with leading WA human rights and disability activists, including Senator Jordon Steele-John himself!
Bring your friends and family, stick around for free food and drinks, socialising and networking! This is a non-alcohol event and we will endeavour to meet all dietary requirements and access needs – please register in advance and let us know how we can support you.
